Computer Science and Climate

Biography

I am a current junior pursuing a joint major in Computer Science and Climate with an emphasis in Data Science and concentration in environmental analysis at Harvey Mudd College. I am passionate about the intersection of environmental solutions and computer/data science and am driven by impactful creations. My ultimate goal is to help make sustainability an any way, shape, or form more accessible to people. Besides this, I enjoy problem solving and going out and getting active whether that be playing sports or going on hikes.

Computer Science Courses: Algorithms, Data Structures/Programming Development, Big Data, Principles of Computer Science, Introduction to Computer Science, and Numerical Methods Math Courses: Discrete Math, Probability and Statistics, Linear Algebra, Multivariable Calculus General Science Courses: Plants & Climate (Ecology), Intro Biology, Intro Chemistry, Mechanics, Thermodynamics, and Engineering Systems

Research/Academic Interests

I am interested in how AI/ML can be leveraged to help model climate problems and how it can be used to help mitigate/solve many climate issues. I believe that it can also help make sustainability more accessible so I am interested in that.

Computational and Data Science Areas

Applied Computer Science; Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems; Climate and Global Dynamics; Computer Science; Ecology; Informatics, Analytics and Information Science; Other Computer and Information Sciences; Other Earth and Environmental Sciences; Statistics and Probability; Visualization and Human-Computer Systems

Motivation

I want to participate in this program because I want to build upon my existing skills while also developing new skills in a more applied and professional setting. I am very interested in how computer/data science and AI/ML can be used in my prospective field and so I am really hoping to join and learn lots about it through this program. I believe that many others feel the same way and so I am excited to meet like-minded people who are environmentally conscious through this community. In a diverse group of like-minded people, I will surely learn a lot and consider problems from many perspectives which I have yet to consider/think deeply about. Through this experience, I am hoping to learn a lot and also build upon my technical skills. A lot of my coursework has been theoretical (with the occasional projects) with no significant impact on the real world besides my own learning. Coming out of this program, I am hoping to have developed something important and impactful to the world--even if it is the smallest thing.
